My Birthday

Since yesterday was my birthday (I am now 2 years away from being 30!), lets take a look at some of the people that Wikipedia deems as important enough to state that they share the day of my birth:

Samuel Mudd(b. 1833): At first mention, the name seems familiar, right? You try to remember where you have heard it before. Well, Dr. Mudd was the physician who treated John Wilkes Booth’s broken leg on the night he assassinated President Lincoln. It was later surmised that he was part of a larger conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln, and he was convicted of conspiracy and sentenced to life in prison. He was later pardoned by President Johnson.

Harvey Firestone(b. 1868): What did one Harvey Samuel Firestone do that made his name well-known to even casual fans? He founded Firestone Tire and Rubber Company and contributed greatly to the growth of the United States in the early 20th century. He worked closely with the Ford family, and even married of his daughters into the Ford family. Can anyone say monopoly?

Branch Rickey(b. 1881): He did two things that made baseball great: he broke the “color barrier” in professional baseball by signing and playing Jackie Robinson, and also was the first to draft a Hispanic player, someone by the name of Roberto Clemente. Hear he was quite a ball player too. He was also instrumental in developing the minor leagues, which allow men to play a child’s game for much too long even if they are never going to be good enough to play at the highest level.

John Hillerman(b. 1932): You know… the guy from Magnum, P.I. that wasn’t Tom Selleck? He even won the Golden Globe Award in 1982. You people don’t appreciate fine American actors when they are performing a role for the ages.

Peter Criss(b. 1945): Why doesn’t Wikipedia have a picture of this guy? That’s lame. He played drums for KISS back in the day. I think he painted his face like a cat, if only because he was way awesome.

David Cook(b. 1982): He who won the seventh season of American Idol also shares my birthday. Good for him… now get a real job, jerk.

Jonah Hill(b. 1983): He’s an actor. You may know him from say pretty decent recent movies, to include: Accepted, Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and, one of my personal favorite movies of last year, Superbad. Pretty decent career so far, Jonas, but don’t let yourself by typecast as the chubby loser in all your movies. I can play that role AND give you a run for your money!

People that died on my birthday include: John Steinbeck (d. 1968), Bobby Darin (d. 1973), and Carl Sagan (d. 1996).

My birthday is also the feast day for some saints or something, but no real other holidays. Hope you enjoyed reading this little blog today. Thanks.
