Welcome to August

As the year speeds by and we have now entered the month of August…

1) My nine year anniversary in the Army is Friday, August 7th. I think I get another medal or something. It would be the end of my military career if not for the upcoming deployment. Hooray to that! I’m not ready to move on yet. I would really like to get to at least twenty, so this deployment comes at a good time. Not only will it renew my faith in the institution that is the Army (hopefully), it will give me even more of an opportunity to get myself right in the weight department so I can stay with the Army. Normal life just interferes too much to really focus on those things. And it might give me enough retirement points so if I do decide to come back and become an officer, I’ll be entitled to E pay and make a little more money. Yay!

2) If you read this on Facebook, you may realize through my often status updates that I have recently had trouble sleeping. I don’t know why this is. Part of it, I think, is the heat. No air conditioning is a problem in my apartment. It may be some underlying stress about the pending deployment, but I don’t really feel that it is that either. Other stressors have recently been removed from my life, so it isn’t really any of them. I could blame Her, but I don’t know if that would be totally fair either. Hopefully it won’t be a major issue at my upcoming school, but it wasn’t for phase 1, so I don’t see it being a problem here either.

3) October is only two months away, which means two things. First, we are about 59 days or so from the Army Ten-Miler in Washington, DC. I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t been training as thoroughly as I probably should be. Life has a way of interrupting even the best-laid plans sometimes. But I still plan on running the race, and hopefully breaking two hours like I did three years ago. Unfortunately, the Friday before the race is the Ben Folds concert in Boston, so this means that I will be driving down to DC the day before the race as opposed to two days. Not really a big deal, but I really wanted to check out the Smithsonian on this trip, especially the American History Museum, which has been closed the last two times I was in DC. Maybe I’ll just go after the race, but I suppose I will figure it out as we get a little closer.

4) I have a hectic schedule coming up for the next 3 1/2 months. I won’t be home for more than a week at a time starting on Friday: two weeks at Fort Knox for 92Y phase 2, four days in CT then 11 days in Utah for Stef’s wedding and pre-deployment goodbyes for the Utah folks. Back for four days again than 16 days at Devens for more pre-mobilization stuff. A week or so back at work, then three weeks at Fort Dix, NJ for more training. After that, two weeks or so of a lull, then mobilization and deployment. Busy times. Good thing I really have no social life that is getting impacted by this, nor that I have a girlfriend to entertain or anything. She would be hating me around mid September for sure.

Nothing else really today. I still have some movie reviews to write, but those can wait. I should probably head off to bed, so until next time…

  1. I can't believe it's been so long since I went to your army 10 miler! Wish I could be there this year…I miss DC and I totally want to check out the American History Museum. I'll be a little jealous!
